Welcome Life With Open Arms!

Miles run: 12 mile temp………………………dirt………………….sunny/cool

Fuel for thought: "Workouts are like brushing my teeth; I don't think about them, I just do them. The decision has already been made."
- Patti Sue Plumer, U.S. Olympian

Calling all runners and running fans:

Its been a few weeks since I last updated on this blog. I have been keeping a low profile around here so I hadn’t been as active. I have, however, been running like crazy guy. That never stops. In fact, I’m just not finishing up my post run exercises ( weight and plank routine) after a 12 miler that ended up being more like a tempo…haha.

This past weekend was quite an amazing adventure. On Saturday I had a quick catch up reunion + food with some great college friends ( Joseph, Johnny, and Chanda…you guys rock!) . Stay tuned for another one where we will try and get the whole gang to come out and play. Then on Sunday, I headed up with my friend Javi for a hike in Apple Valley, up in the High Desert. We ended up meeting up with his cousins, Eddie and Matt and some other friends and headed for a great hike up this dessert mountain. For some reason, Javi and I forgot the hike part, for we ran that thing like it was the race of a lifetime and man was it hard or what! The steep incline kicked my behind. After the great hike we headed back to Eddie and Matt’s place for some great vegetarian cooking. I have to say, the food was amazing and the best part, healthy. It consisted of whole wheat pasta with pineapple tomato sauce and spices, sun dried tomato tofu sasage pizza with lots of veggies, fresh juice drinks and vegan chocolate brownies….yum! We then watched some movies and had some awesome and mind stimulating conversations. Who would have thought that this dirt road in the middle of what seemed like nowhere, would lead us to such fun day. Thanks guys for a great time !

Its Friday again today( meaing I'm off tomorrow and the next day) and I am excited to see what the next two days will bring. I’ll be heading over to Riverside to visit friends and family. Whatever else happens, I’ll welcome with open arms….living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

The LA Marathon is Sold Out!

Miles run: 3 miles of quick intensity spurts….asphalt/dirt……………sunny/nice

Fuel for thought: "Everyone in life is looking for a certain rush. Racing is where I get mine."
- John Trautmann

Marathon ticker: 4 days to go!

Calling all runners and running fans :

For the first time in the history of the LA Marathon, the race has sold out! The cap was set at 25,000 official runners and the mark was reached last Friday morning! This represents a 45% increase over last year when they had a record low count of registered participants. Contributing factors to the increase in interest include: the marketing set around the Dodger’s and its stadium, the newly set course starting at the Dodger stadium and ending in beautiful Santa Monica, and rescheduling the race back in March as opposed to late May. For those of you left out, Shame on you…lol.

First and foremost, Happy St. Patrick’s everybody! The only shots I’ll be taking tonight will be coconut water shots…drink up! This morning my buddy, Javi and I, did a three miler of quick, high intensity, intervals to get the legs in gear for high mile pacing come Sunday. I tried it before last year’s Long Beach marathon and I increased my time by about 15 minutes. At that pace I should be running elite status in no time….haha. Running Marathons is all trial and error…try it, if it works for you, great! If it doesn’t, move on and try something else. Living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Calling all runners and running fans:

I was looking at my inventory of Salmiler Tshirts and I noticed that I have shirts of certain sizes that haven‘t moved out as fast. If you are a running fan or a runner and would like one, shoot me an email with your size and address and I will be glad to send one your way free of charge….its not about the money, it’s the passion for the running lifestyle! If we agree on this same passion, the least I can do is give you a shirt!

After having had a breakfast of champs this am, I decided to update this blog as I wait for things to digest so I can head out and do the workout above. With only 24 days left until the LA marathon next month, I only have a few more days to do some speed beneficial workouts before I start to taper down the mileage. Every year I get so excited for this race, especially now that I live here. I love LA and the thought of “running this town” always puts me in the best state of mind. The interesting thing is that its never been one of my best races. In fact, it’s the toughest one I’ve ran so far. Nonetheless, this year like every year I am up for yet another challenge and LA always seems to stretch me past my running limits….living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Calling all runners and running fans:

Its been crazy the last few weeks. I have been out in Florida for some Leadership Seminars and hadn’t updated this blog in some time. I have, however, been keeping up with my daily runs as I prepare for this years LA Marathon next month. I do have do admit, California has a lot better running climate than Florida. Haha. How many of you guys out there will be joining me this year in LA?

Just now waking up from a recovery nap from this morning’s awesome Redondo Beach 10k. It was a great race with awesome weather down by the beach, and a good pace of a little over 6 minute miles. Beach weather rocks! Luckily this could be a regular option considering that I will be moving closer to what I consider paradise which will make my regular runs all that more fun and enjoyable. Tomorrow is my last day here in Riverside. I shall be moving out west, still with no definite location destination. I shall be staying in corporate temporary housing in Downey for a month or so while I find a place further out west to eventually call home. Riverside has been my home for the last ten years ( well, I did go off to college in San Diego 4 of those years) and now the time has finally come to part ways. I always wanted to live closer to the beach, ever since the fun days by the beaches of La Jolla in SD. Now with the new career with Darden, things seem to be working well for me. Now lets not forget, I still have my parents, siblings, family and many great friends out in these areas. Don’t be surprised if you see me running once or twice a week along the usual spots along Victoria or eating at one of the local eateries in these areas. I purposely chose to be as close to the beach as possible, yet close enough to get back to the IE in no time. I’ll be straight down along the 91. I will keep posting and updating on this Salmiler running blog about all the running and crazy adventures I engage in to keep you all up to date. So long runners, keep living the running reality…living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Start of the Redondo Beach 5k

Off they go! The chick in the center with a blue top and black shorts is Karla Alberuz, the winning female with a time of 18:00 flat. Very nice and humble by the way!

My buddy Javi and Karla Alberuz after the race. She was nice enough to take a picture. Thanks Karla and Congrats to you both!

Calling all runners and running fans:

Just now waking up after a nice and warm 8 hours of sleep goodness. Soon I shall be on my way to running recovery from yesterday’s intense interval workout up skyline. Its been 14 days of this new year already and so far things are looking good. I am running more and longer than ever before. Even when it has rained the last couple of weeks, I’ve managed to get out there and get those miles in. I also feel more fit for my workouts are more intense and strenght focused, always complemented by a post run workout session. As for my diet, I love food and most of you all know it! I am always making smart choices when it comes down to my fuel intake. I am, however, working on my sweet tooth though. All this boils down to having great energy and health to continue in this journey we call life. Calling all runners and running fans:

Heading out to one of LA’s finest Manhattan Beach, for some moonlight racing. Now that I will be relocating to this area soon, I have made it a point to start exploring some key spots and what better way than racing. This evening is the Yuletide 5k Moonlight race at 5:30 pm along beach front of Manhattan Beach. With the Luminarias lighting the course and glow necklaces on all participants, the Yuletide 5K is one of the most exciting races to watch. So come out and stand on the Manhattan Beach Pier for a great view. Feel free to bring a camera and catch that great shot for memory’s sake. Miles run: 0.……………….the rain and I are not the best of friends right now!

Fuel for thought: "Those who say that I will lose and am finished will have to run over my body to beat me."

Calling all runners and running fans:

This rain has made it extremely difficult to get my miles in for the day so I decided to just take the day off and enjoy a nice warm hot chocolate by the fire with some Sandies pecan shortbread cookies. I know I will have to make up for it and for the extra intake of calorie goodness but as I like to think, tomorrow will be a new day full of opportunity to lose it all.

Its been a week since I started the new job and I am truly enjoying it thus far. I really didn’t know what to expect but I can say that I am now a fan of their food..haha. I never was really a prior fan of this concept, but its interesting how things change over night. I only hope I like it. After all, I will be eating it day and night, literally!!! Then again, I hadn’t visited Mimi’s Café prior to my employment there and it wasn’t until then that I really enjoyed the food. I have a feeling it has something to do with the fact that it’s a perk meal…lol. Everthing tastes good when its free right? Lol. Now for the move out to the beach. Super excited for February. Upon my return from my leadership seminars in Florida, I shall be relocating to the South bay area ( Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach…etc) Stoked!
Congratulations to those of you that ran in this years 2009 Rock ’n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon and Half Marathon. Awesome performance recognition goes out to 21 year old Daba Bekana, of Ethiopia, on finishing 1st in the Half Marathon with a time of 1:01:40. His finish was the fastest half marathon performance ever run in the history of running, in the state of Nevada. I ran the marathon back in 2005 when I got an excellent PR for that time period in my life. Times have changed and I feel that I am ready to head back there in 2010 for some more dessert racing…hehe.
Check out the video below from my recent quick trip to Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch in Los Olivos, Ca. Its crazy how one would expect the place inundated with media and fans but instead ( see for yourself ) …living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Calling all runners and running fans:

Happy belated Thanksgiving Everyone!!! Gobble, gobble!!! Lol. Yesterday I started my thanksgiving in Anaheim running the Plymouth Turkey Trot 5k. It was a very nice day, too nice to be Thankgiving, which made it for a nice race early in the morning. The race took place at the Yorba Regional Park. The race started at one end of the park and went to the other end and back along a bike path in a wash the runs parallel to the 91 freeway. Great job Javi on running this with me and on that great kick at the end. I saw that and couldn‘t believe it was you, but it was. Who would have thought that you would finish so strong considering that you have been sick for some weeks now. After the race, I hadeded over to my parents for the usual Thankgiving Feast. I was involved in the cooking process along with my sister, mother and dad. More than just the food, which was greatly devoured in a couple of minutes, it was the quality of hours spent together as a family. Good times! The rest of the day I spent texting, emailing, and face book messaging friends and family, wishing them a Happy Thanksgiving of their own. Now for some recovery miles from both the race and all the good eats. Now there is plenty of leftovers, including my parents, oh so good tamales, therefore, I will have to add a couple more miles to my running schedule in the upcoming days so that I don’t kill myself with guilt from all that happy eating. I now propose a toast ( with sparking apple cider…haha) to a wonderful holiday season for us all….living this lifestyle, on the run, R U ?

Congratulations to Fernado Cabada from Boulder, Colorado on winning big this past weekend at the 34th Annual Gazette Stockade-athon 15k race in New York . Another great victory for this great running champ. Great Job buddy! Check out the dailygazette to watch how it all went down.

This past weekend was also the Riverside Mission Inn Run where I ran the 5k race. The goal was to keep it at 5:40 per mile but ended up with something more like 5:46 to finish with a time of 18 minutes. No regrets, it was a great race with great people so it was all worth it. Up next, a Turkey Trot for Thanks Giving. If you have any suggestions as far as turkey trots please let me know.

Today was I back doing speed. I did an intense speed workout. I ran a 7 mile 1 mintue interval workout with a minute recovery and 1 m. warm and 1 m. cool. These always kick my butt, but its all worth it….living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Calling all runners and running fans:

Its been some time since I last posted on here. I took two weeks off after the marathon to fully recover from the race and I ended up getting too comfortable. I started my running back up this past Monday and yet I still didn’t post on here. Today I went out for a eight mile medium tempo run with 1 minute intervals. I started up with a mile and a half warm up, 5 mile-1 minute intervals at tempo pace and a mile and a half warm down. I need to get some speed workouts in before next weekend's Mission Inn Run (click to see link). I will be doing the 5k, but for those of you that feel competitive, they also have a 10k and for the very first time, a half marathon also.

On another side note, good luck to Ryan Hall tomorrow as he runs the ING New York Maraton and attempts to become the fastest American Marathoner of all time. Props to anybody else out there also running it. For me it will be next year when I plan on running New York. Post Marathon

Miles run: 0 miles until Thurs 22st.

Fuel for thought: "Dream barriers look very high until someone climbs them. They are not barriers anymore."
- Lasse Viren

Calling all runners and running fans:

Its been a week since my last blog post and a marathon has been successfully run during that time. Last Sunday I ran the Long Beach Marathon in Long Beach California to finish with a Boston qualifying time of 3:05. It not much to brag about but for me, that’s a huge accomplishemt. Remember, I am not trying to get signed to a shoe or a endorecement contract anytime soon so its good enough. During the race I was on pace to break 3 hours until mile 22. That’s when the blister bought upon myself by my own lack of knowledge, kicked in and it all went downhill from there. I was running a 6:53 pace and felt great. Only that on mile 22 I started feeling the buring of this huge blister on the bottom of my right foot that made me limp for a couple minutes . I never should have put double socks on that day. Thinking it was double protection, I layered those suckers on excited to run in comfort. To my surprise it was more like the last three miles of layered hell….never again!!! Overall the race went very well and I was happy with the results. Now I just can’t wait until Thusday to start my running again. I decide to to take 10 days off to make sure I am fully recovered form the run. So far I feel great and know that my training was done smart in a way to run a good race and still be heathy. Also, Great job to my buddy Javi, who also ran the race with me and pulled though. You are awesome man. I expected nothing less out of you. Marathon goal ticker: 2 days to go………………………….

Calling all runners and running fans:

With less than 72 hours before the race I did something I never thought I would ever do. I ran a light interval workout. What was I thinking? You may ask…Well, the key here is light. I was reading an article in the Runners’ World magazine where researchers at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, discovered through various studies that tapering is most effective in maintaining and increasing ones fitness by reducing the volume but keeping the intensity high in the two weeks prior to marathon racing. They suggested doing 2- 3 high intensity workouts on week two prior and 3-4 the week before. I, on the other hand, decided to just do one light interval workout. Lets see how much it comes in handy come race day. I’ll be sure to let you all know…

This week I have been eating left and right in what we call carbo load week. Thanks to Abby for having me over for dinner last night. The pasta with turkey meat sauce was amazing and the angel food cake with fresh strawberries dessert was to die for. What shall I be eating next? Mmmm…Yum… Waiting to find out.

On Saturday I shall be heading over to Long Beach early on to go to the Health Fitness Expo and pick up my bib and goodie bag. I shall be staying at a Hotel nearby to asure that I get the best rest possible just a mile away from the starting line. I am super excited and thrilled about the Marathon. I have trained so hard in preparation for it and I feel as though I am ready. I am confident I trained smart and look forward to some positive results at the finish line….living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Happy Labor day everybody!!! Although, I know there are many of us that don’t get to celebrate it like we are supposed to. Now I know its been a few days since I have updated on my running. I have been super busy and I do admit a bit lazy also to write blog updates but here I am again. Today I went out for a 10 mile easy, very easy run. I felt great. My body has been feeling super strong and my legs nice and relaxed these days considering the always increasing workouts for the upcoming marathon. This weekend I ran a 22 mile long run. I started earlier than usual and had time to come home, relax and even take a nice long recovery nap. Sleep is very important and I never sacrifice it for I know the importance as part of a well rounded marathon workout regimen. Tomorrow is probably my last hill workout up Skyline before the marathon. I have really focused on hills this time around and really hope to see some postive results come marathon day. I have taken this from one of my good frinds that says that, a hill work out is a speed workout with weights on your thighs and it sure feels like it when doing them. As I am writing this I am also enjoying a bowl of frozen crushed pineapple. It’s a great treat for these hot summer days...living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Miles run: 10 mile run……………………dirt……………………hot

Calling all runners and running fans:

This past weekend’s 20 mile long run was run in Rancho Cucamonga along an old train track route that as of recent has been converted into a really nice and convenient bike/running/walk trail. This after my buddy Javier and I debated for two hours trying to find the most suitable 20 mile marked run somewhere between Riverside and El Monte, which is where he lives. The run started at around 9:30 am. We parked by Starbucks in the corner of Haven in Rancho and ran 5 miles east towards Fontana and back for a total of 10 miles. We then got to refresh with water and gels before heading out west towards Upland for another 5 miles out and 5 back for a total of 10 miles. Had we started earlier we would have avoided the 99 degree heat we ended up running in. It was insane. In no way was that a smart move. Neither of us knew it would get this hot. Either way, by the time we started feeling the heat we were five miles out, which meant we still needed to get back. Props to Javi. It was his longest run thus far in his quest for the Long Beach Marathon in October. I guess we will have to get up at the sound of the roaster to avoid such hot predicament in the upcoming long runs. Today I went out for a ten miler. I had wanted to do a hill workout up Skyline but I still felt a little sore from Saturday’s long run and so I decided to postpone the workout until tomorrow. With just 41 days left until the Long Beach Marathon, I can’t afford to miss out on any workouts , but at the same time I gotta be smart about my training and listen to my body….living this life on the run, R U?

No Way back…Long Beach Marathon Registration Submitted

Goal Marathon Ticker: 47 days to go….

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today I went out for an 8 mile lazy run. Just went out there and ran while I did some thinking. It is during my running that I can truly get my thoughts straightened out and come up with solutions to complex issues going on in life. Today was not the exception. I had been thinking about the nearby future career wise and during the run I was able to come to a general consensus that my never ending mind of mine has willingly accepted. Perhaps that can give me the break I need to refocus my attention on the upcoming Marathon. Its now official. Not that It never was. Only that now I have finally registered for the no refund Long Beach Marathan taking place on Sunday October 11th. I even got an awesome hotel room nearby for my stay. I shall be stying at the Best Western in Long Beach, just 1.64 miles away from the Convention Center and the Starting line. The goal is to leave for Long Beach on Saturday October the 10 bight and early. This just in time to pick up the marathon goodie bag, bib and tracking number at the Marathon Expo taking place Friday and Saturday at the Convention Center. After that, I plan to just chill. I want to make sure those last few hours are relaxed and I get a good last dinner meal before the race. I will also been on vacation from work, which means I will be off October 6th throught the 16th. This should give me a few days before and a few days after to truly enjoy the Marathon experience. Calling all runners and running fans:

spacer:80 Just now getting up from a well deserved power nap after an intense 20 mile run this morning. Sure feels good to run high mileage and feel super uper great!!! Comes to show that the marathon training is coming along nice, smart and steady. I’m happy to report that my younger sister is already gearing up for the cross country fall season. She just started high school and has already been overwhelmed with her classes and school involvements with cross country being one that truly has her excited. This morning I picked her up and took her to her first weekend practice at her high school. I’m very proud of her and hope that she truly enjoys running as much as I have all these years.

After dropping off the sister I then headed over to the usual spot on Victoria, parked the samilermobile and started my 20 mile journey. In order to get a better accurate mileage count and to increase the intensity at certain miles in the run and therefore be most efficient at the weakest points in the race ( simulating a marathon) , I ran up to Arlington St. and back for a total of 12 miles and then back up to Washington St. and back for a total of 8, for an overall total of 20 consecutive miles. The first goal was to run the 6 mile trajectory back at about a 50 second per mile faster than the first 6 miles heading out. I then ran 8 miles to Washinton Street and back ( 4 up and 4 back ) with miles 17-20 faster by 1 minute per mile then miles 13-16. This interval like routine was great in that it trains me to push when I am the most tired. In a given marathon, I usually slow down by about 20 minutes on the second half. My goal is to keep it even or slower by 5 mintues at most. This run felt great and I’m sure if things continue as such, I will not have any problems reaching the desired goal time at the Long Beach Marathon in October…Sweet!!!!…..living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today was a 10 mile recovery along the canal that runs parallel to Victoria, after yesterday’s intense 7 mile up hill workout up Skyline. A shout out to Mike Harris for also completing the work out. Great job buddy!!! I’m sure this run has really contributed to your training for the Long Beach half. Yes, Mike is running the half Long Beach Marathon on the same day that I will be running the Long Beach Marathon. All I can say is that my legs are really sore right now, but today’s recovery did loosen them up a bit. I’m sure I shall be fine by tomorrow’s run. I got to get going, its Friday for me and I have quite an agenda before I can relax for the next few days….living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today was an easy 6 mile run. Thanks to my friend Mike, yesterday I ran a 10 mile run that ended up being more like a tempo run. This after, on Mike’s suggestion, we ended up taking the canal trail back to the car. It was here that Mike started to increase the pace to the point where we were no longer running a simple 10 mile medium run, but more like a tempo run. We got back to the car exuasted and thiking “what was that?” All in all it was a great workout. Tomorrow is a long run…looking at probably running an 18 miler. The Long Beach Marathon is in 8 weeks and I only have a few weeks before I begin to taper off….living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Its Back To School Time

Miles run:8 mile run…………….dirt…………………………….warm

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today I went out on an 8 mile run earlier this morning. However, just now I am finishing up my post run routine exercise. Not that the session is long, no not at all; its that I have been lazy for the last two hours just browsing online. I tend to do that after I run…I tend to cyber wonder. But hey what the heck…its my Friday and I’ve had a very productive week thus far so I deserve it, right? After all this summer is coming to an end as school begings tomorrow. As school begins I go with it too. I should start subbing again any day, which means less time to just relax. It will be nice heading back into the classroom though. Especially when the money is not bad for a side gig. With so many projects in the works, money always comes in handy. Below is a recent video made in response to the now famous wedding dance video shown below a couple of weeks ago. It shows the same dance routine only under the unfortunate events that most commonly happen after marriage…Watch it and Enjoy. For now its time to get ready to head on out and fulfill my other job obligations before I call it a day…living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

The end of the Vasque Trail Series

Miles run: 8 mile recovery………………….dirt/asphalt………….sunny/nice

Fuel for thought: "Hills are speedwork in disguise." - Frank Shorter

Calling all runners and running fans:

Yesterday was the third and last race of the Vaque Trail Race Summer Series. However, this series could not have come to an end without a stellar performance by your truly, or at least I thought so. This time I took with me a good running friend, Mike, who ran as a bandit and got to experience the non stop hills that I never stopped talking about prior to race three. We got ther at around 5:15pm or so. The race didn’t start until 6:15p so we had plenty of time to warmup and stretch. I saw a few people from race one and two but no one that had previously beaten me or that I hadn’t already defeated by race two…hehe. So the race started as timed and off we went towards the hills. I was in 5th from the beginning until the third mile. At this point we were well into the hills and I used that to my advantage. Having run tempos up Skyline has really helped me build that leg strengh required to conquer these suckers. It was here that I passed the number 4 guy and keep going. I felt great but knew I had two miles to go so I stayed at my pace. At this point I was running at a pace of 6:10 per mile. We then got to the last mile which was a long straight way and I knew this would be my only shot at catching up to the third place runner. At this point I was at about a 5:50 pace and boy did it feel fast. I kept pushing and pushing and somehow my body responded well. I came close to that third spot but no enough to secure it. As soon as he heard me coming from behind, he picked up his pace and kicked to the end. I might have not gotten the nice pair of Vasque pair of Shoes as the third place finisher but I got much more that gave me the satisfaction of a victorious race and overall series. I ended up in 4th place with a time of 30:16. Race I had ran a 32:25 coming in 4th place…Race Two I finished with a time of 31:56 to finish 4th again. Looking at the series, I managed to improve my time by 2 minutes and 11 seconds from race #1 to race #3. That to me was more than any award I could have obtained. I have trained hard and the results have shown for it. Now with two months to go until the Long Beach Marathon, I may find another race or two as I continue my training. Great job to all those that ran the Vasque race series. I truly enjoyed running these trail runs, I will miss them, but hope to return next year for more hills. Maybe then we can break 30 minutes?…living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Day Without a Run

Miles run: day off from running today…..

Fuel for thought: A runner must run with dreams in his heart, not money in his pocket.
-Emil Zatopek

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today was my day off from running. In fact, I slept in until about 10am, woke up and had a big breakfast. I ate a huge bowl of Rasin Bran cereal from Trader Joe’s with Chocolate Soy milk, two bananas, a hand full of almonds, and two slices of Multigrain toast also from Trader Joe’s. I enjoy my carbs, and feel less guilty eating them in morning. Days off are great, especially when you have a race coming up in three days. The Vasque 5 mile race series will culminate with race three this Thursday in Tustin, Ca. I am feeling a bit nervious but confident that I am well prepared and shall perform well. I am sure that by the end of this month, all retail sotores will start getting a head start on their promotional sales for the “Christmas holidays.” Its what happened last year and it will happen again this year. At least for me, its hard to think of Christmas when its 104 degrees outside….its just not right. Today I went out on a 7 mile recover run after yesterdays tempo run. At this moment I am enjoying a 32 ounce bottle of Gatorade… and yes the tiger is in me…living this lifestyle on the run, R U? >

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today has been one of those days….I mean come on can’t you tell? Its 9:30 pm and I am just now posting this blog. Normally I post right after I get back from running. Alright so here it goes. Today I got up and went on a 12 mile medium long run long Victoria to Arlington Street and back. The second half I ran about 4 mintues faster than the first half. This is just something I am getting used to as part of my marathon training. This way I can get my body to push harder on the second half and not slow down as much. I firmly believe that in marathon training, it is your strenght in the second half of the race that determines how well you will do overall. In my last marathon races I have slowed down dramatically from running 7:10 minute mile averages in the first half to running 8:50 on the second half average mile. If I can just get myself better prepared to conquer that second half, I think I will be in good shape to reach my goal set for the Long Beach Marathon in October, 2009. Tomorrow morning is a 5 mile interval workout. These always kick my butt but I sure enjoy seeing the results. Next week, on Thursday, is the third of the Vasque 5 mile trail race and I have already set the trend of beating my previsous times. Therefore, as your can see the pessure is on…living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Today I went running up Skyline in Corona, Ca. It took me approximately 36 minutes and 13 seconds to get from my car to the highest peak running hard. The first time I did a timed run like this I ran it in 41 minutes. I have been able to see some improvement thus far. My next 5 mile race is in two weeks, where I am hopping to imporve my time again from the second race ran two weeks ago. Today I woke up with a strong desire to run hard, so I did. I ran a 4 mile tempo run earlier in the morning and felt great afterwards. You always know you have run a great work out when you finish wanting more. Yesterday I was off from running. Instead, I spent the entire day hanging out at The Grove in Los Angeles. I don’t think I had ever been to this hip hang out spot, but truly enjoyed it. Suppossedly its LA’s major tourist and celebrity hang out spots. Basically its this strip mall outside in the open filled with top of the line shops and boutiques along with great restaurants. There is even a nice water fountain in the center and a trail that roams the entire mall. After having lunch at the Cheesecake Factory ( which by the way, I had to top off with a delectable slice of their key lime ) we headed over to do some shopping for one of my friends’s bachelor party. The sucker is getting married soon and wants to enjoy his last days of “liberty.” haha. Just as a reminder, the Long Beach Marathon is only 2.5 months away ( Sunday October 11, 2009). There is still time if you have the desire to run a great marathon. This marathon is run along the beach in Long Beach. Check out the calendar section on this page to find out more about this race. Speaking of tying the knot, weddings and such, here is a one of a kind wedding dance entrance that will be sure to spark some ideas for your next of many weddings. haha….living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Sun or Rain: Neither?

Calling all runners and running fans:
Just now recuperating from a 10 mile run in this Riverside heat. I can’t believe its so hot out here. Better yet, I can’t believe I dare run in such conditions. But then again, I do have other options. Like that one that involves getting up at 6:00 am in the morning and getting the entire workout done before the intense sun rays start peeking through or that other option of not running at all ( um…I don‘t think the second one is an option…Scratch that) . Sometimes we make our lives a bit more complicated than they have to. I complain about the heat, but yet I am not willing to give up two hours sleep to avoid such hot running conditions. What happens in the winter? I complain and wine about the rain. I nag and nag about how I hate the rain trickling down my back as I run, but yet from this present perspective, rain sounds much better than heat right about now. What am I going to say come winter, most likely the opposite. A second alternative involves a change in the environment in which I live and run. How about living somewhere that resembles the weather in San Diego, where I lived and absolutely enjoyed while attending college a few years back.? An environment where it is never too hot to go running, and therefore I only have one issue to complain about, the rain….living this lifestyle on the run, R U ?

What an Experience at Jury Service

Miles run: day off from running…..interval workout yesterday….dirt………hot hot hot!!!

Fuel for thought: "It's very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit." -George Sheehan

This week I have been on jury duty and have had to call every afternoon at 5:30 to see if I was needed for the next day. I got lucky the first day, Monday, and the next day, and the next, next, but not today. I called yesterday and they asked me to report to jury service today at 8am…bummer. I have to admit I didn’t know what to expect. I hadn’t ever been to jury service, not that I hadn’t been summoned, no no no. I just hadn’t gone…hahha. So I finally did fulfill my obligation as a citizen of this country. I gotta say the process can be long, ardous, and boring. You might consider taking some books or magazines to keep you busy, which I did. Okay so after we were all seated in this big room with a few tv’s throughout, we were given an orientation about the process, why we were there, and what to expect. Furthoermore, then they threw in a video to further complement the orinetation. After the video, they instructed us to fill out a questionire which they would use to select 85 jury members out of the 250 total present there for a 13 day trial scheduled to start on Monday. At that point I got worried…Can you imagine having to go to court as a jury member for 13 days from 8am- 5pm getting paid 15 buck a day plus .34 cents a mile to the court? I can but certainly didn’t any part do with it…..Not to mention my running, I’d go nuts if I couldn’t run past a week , let alone 13 days!!!

Okay so finally we all turned in out quiestionere and then we had to wait some more for the personnel and the judge to look at all the questionires and select their 85 person jury. Thouse 85 would need to come back on Monday for direct questions from the lawyers ( defense and procescution) from which they would select 16 max for the trial. What got me out of it was my explination of financial hardship…..how am I going to live off 15 bucks a day….this runner’s gotta eat!!! Haha. Would they have understood that I had a busy running lifestyle and couldn’t be kept from running? No!!!!! Well, luckly I didn’t have to recur to my backup plan for I was dismissed. As they called all those 85 members selected you could hear the sounds of dissapointement and negative reaction. At the same time, you could also hear the cheers from those not selected after they had passed their name for it was alphabetical. I certainly felt relieved when they flew past the Haro and went on to Hurtado…I was like , Shweet!!!!! Lol. Sorry Hurtado but you saved me, thanks. As soon as I got out of the court… I made sure I ran to my car…No I wasn’t trying to make up my lost run for the day. I was trying to escape a sudden change of mind by the judges…..“um can we have you guys come back…we need a few more” Nope, not me sorry your honor… Im out!!! Now that I’m home I have been enjoying some flamin’ hots to celebrate my victory..haha. I go to work in a few hours and that’s the start of my weekend…Tomorrow is my long run…16 miler cause that’s how I roll…yup…livinig this lifesytle on the run, R U?

Salmiler on the run with: Nicholas Arciniaga

Miles run: 7 mile run…………………asphalt……………….hot…..

Fuel for thought:
"Somewhere in the world someone is training when you are not. When you race him, he will win."
- Tom Fleming's Boston Marathon training sign on his wall * Nick's favorite quote

Here at Salmiler lifestyle we have been privileged to have a few words with Nicholas Arciniaga on his return from a successful performance at the PeachTree 10k in Atlanta Georgia on Sat. July 4th . He finished the race with an impressive time of 29.44 and placed 31 out of 50,0009 participants that also took to the streets to run this great race. Previously, he ran his first international race ,representing the US at the Ome 30k race in Japan ( sister race to Boston), where he impressively ended up finishing in 5th place in a pr of 1:34:25, only a few seconds behind 2 of Japan’s top aggressive marathoners. We came across this seasoned runner originally from Southern California , a few months ago and were greatly impressed by his running record, and his running attitude. Actually, it was after the hype of the Boston Marathon, after having finished with a time of 2:16:13, an impressive performance and becoming a top US finisher. However, more than any accomplishments, what is greatly admired of Nick is his determination and ambition to run, train hard and never ever give up. Clearly, a race is never a man’s sure win. One must be prepared to accept the great and not so great results and take that as running experience, sleep it off and get up the next day; refocus and continue with the training because there is another race to be run tomorrow.

Name: Nicholas Arciniaga
Hometown: Fountain Valley, CA
Current Location: Rochester Hills, MI
High school : Fountain Valley High School
College: Cal State University, Fullerton
Career: Professional Runner.

Q. When did you first begin this lifestyle of running? I first started running my freshman year of high school, but it didn't really become my lifestyle until my 2nd year of college.
Why? I joined my high school team because my friends told me I would do well at the sport and I have always had a competitive mindset towards running. Up until my 2nd year of college Running was really just a sport to me, and a way to pay for college. Then I finally hit the tipping point when I realized that I would probably run for the rest of my life, I truly enjoy the way it feels when I’m outside running myself to exhaustion.

Q. Who is or has been the biggest heroic inspiration for you in your running lifestyle? This is a tough question for me. There have always been runners who I have looked up to and idolized, such as Brian Sell and Ryan Hall, but it is tough for me to call them Heroes. I've known Ryan Hall since I was in High School, he has always been heads and feet ahead of everyone I knew, he is the same age as me and he is the type of runner I aspire to be. Fast, Smooth, Humble, and a down to earth great guy. Then there is Brian Sell, who I have looked up to for years now. He has a similar background to myself, not amazing in high school or college, but finally found his nitch in marathoning. Brian's work ethic and his ability to train harder and push through more pain than anyone I know. That is also the type of runner I want to be, to push myself to new limits.

Q. Okay Nick, so you have been very successful in high school and college? I was decent in High School, but below average in College. Most people stop running after they start their careers and or after they settle down. Why are you still running? I continue to run because it is my dream to go to the Olympics. Right now my focus is on 2012, then it will be 2016, and so on. As long as I am still able to run, and compete at a top level I will. Do you think you will ever stop? No, it is something I can see myself doing until I'm 90-some years old.

Q Briefly take us through a week’s routine in the running lifestyle of Nick Arciniaga. That’s easy. Every morning I wake up at 6:45 or so, then go for a 10-20 mile run with my teammates. Currently I am on the Hansons-Brooks Olympic Development Program. After my run I eat, and either go to work or take a nap. I work at Hanson's Running Shop, a store owed by my coaches, Kevin and Keith Hanson. I only work part-time since my coaches want us to be more focused on our training than work. After work, or after my nap I go on a 2nd run of 4-6 miles. This run is usually pretty easy and on my own. Then I have dinner, watch some TV, and go to bed around 10. This is a typical day, everyday of the week. Once a week or so, the team will get together, go to a movie, have a card night, or go out to celebrate a birthday.

Q If running was not an option for you, what other hobby/lifestyle do you think you would be engaged in? I have always been an active and competitive, so I would have probably ended up doing some endurance sport, whether it was cycling or swimming. If I was not good enough to make it a living then I would likely use my Accounting Degree in some way. Although part of me wants to say that I would have ended up living out in the wilderness somewhere, perhaps being a park ranger at some National Park in California. I have always enjoyed camping and being out in nature, surrounded by trees, animals, and not much else.

Q What has been the most gratifying moment in your life as a runner thus far? The most gratifying moment is a tie between Qualifying for the Olympic Trials in my first marathon ever(Chicago, 2006), and Finishing 10th place and 1st American at the Boston Marathon last year(2008).

QWhat has been the toughest, and how did you overcome these tough times? The toughest was my freshman year of college, the entire year, where it seemed that no matter what I did, I could run as fast as I knew I was capable of, and because of that I nearly gave up the sport. By the end of the year it was a conversation that I had with my teammate that made me rethink my whole attitude that I had towards running. Basically, in order for me to succeed, I had to make running my passion, make it my life. For too long I had run, done my workouts, like they were a job, a task. Now, every run I do still has a purpose, but I make sure that it is enjoyable and beneficial in the long run.

Q How has running influenced other aspects of your life? Giving me the opportunity to travel a lot more than I would normally have been able to. The most recent of while was a race in Japan. Running has also taught me a lot about hard work, patience, time management skills, healthy eating, and how to be calm and level-headed in any kind of situation. All of these skills can be used in pretty much every aspect of my life.

Q What piece of advice can you give to others just starting out in this running lifestyle? Pretty much the same thing that my teammate told me in college, go into every run with a good attitude, that every run will be a benefit to you. Taking a negative attitude makes running seem more like a chore, nobody likes doing chores. Sooner or later you will hit the tipping point and you will begin enjoy running more than you hate it, eventually maybe even become obsessed with it.

Q What are your running goals and aspirations for the future? My Main Goal is to qualify for the Olympics. My best shot is in the marathon for either the 2012 or 2016 Olympics. My chances are realistically pretty slim, so I would be just as happy if I were to represent the US in at least one International Race, and there are a few of those opportunities each year. I would also like to travel around the world a lot more, touring as many major marathons as I can around the world.

Q What are your thoughts on salmiler lifestyle? I must admit, I'm not quite sure what the lifestyle is, however I'm pretty sure that we have the same ideals and Lifestyle.

Q How may others interested in contacting you or keep updated on your running, do so? My family and friends contact me pretty often. People who I ran with in high school or ran after I did e-mail me every once in a while to ask how things are going, or to congratulate me on races that they hear about. Then there are people on Facebook and Myspace who I maybe met once, or never even met before, who congratulate me, add me as their friend, or even ask for running advice.

Okay so there you have it, that was one heck of an interview. We want to thank Nick Arciniaga for taking the time to have a few words with us here at the Salmiler lifestyle. There is no doubt that his running lifestyle and accomplishments will offer inspiration to others already in this lifestyle and those just beginning. We wish you the best of luck in your quest for the Olympics and all your future goals to come. Oh yeah and good luck at the Bix 7 Mile race in Des Moines, Iowa next week, thanks Nick!!! ... here at Salmiler our lifestyle is on the run, R U?

Sure Feels good to not be running in the heat!!!

Miles run: day off from running. On a weekend? YES!!!

Fuel for thought: "I had as many doubts as anyone else. Standing on the starting line, we're all cowards." -- Alberto Salazar, three-time winner of the NYC marathon

Calling all runners and running fans:

It had been so long since I had my last day of running rest day on a weekend. Yes people, I haven’t ran this whole weekend it sure feels nice considering the wave of heat that has invaded this part of So Cal. You know its hot when you see old ladies grabbing their steering wheel with a paper towel like if they had just taken a pan right out of the oven with a cloth mitten. Yes, it has been precisely like an oven here….very, very, CALIENTE!!! As for my physical state, I am however, feeling sore from my last trail race on Thursday. I felt fine yesterday and Friday… but today my quads have really been hit hard with all that lactic acid buildup. I’m sure I will be fine and if not, tomorrow’s run will take care of it.

Yesterday Salmiler lifestyle was featured on Jason Sandler’s I WEAR YOUR SHIRT .com and boy was it hilarious or what. In one of the videos you see Jason and his gang getting ready to go out for a run sporting the Salmiler shirts, not before engaging in a funny as heck stretching routine…. They then proceed to run around in circles before calling it a day, which got me thinking, I wish it was that easy….lol. You all have got watch the video so you can see what I’m talking about. Props to Jason and his gang for putting on a good show sporting the Salmiler lifestyle shirt….living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Vasque Series Race #2

Miles run: 5 mile race plus 3 mile warm-up/cool down………dirt/rolling hills…..hot.

Fuel for thought: “ happy running” -Josh Spiker * posted in the store hours bulletin at his Inside Track Shop in Ventura, Ca.

Calling all runners and running fans:

Just now getting some time to post this blog after having spent time with the family after today’s Vasque 5 Mile Race #2 in Tustin, Ca. Today’s race was on the same Course as the first one with the exception that this one was run backwards so it was a bit tricky… I couldn’t really get into a rythem until the very end. I kept on forgetting how steep these hills really were or maybe I wasn’t as fit..haha. Throughout the race I was in 5th place and had every intention of decreasing my placing. In fact, I knew there was some unfinished business from race one and it didn’t took long for me to react and go on a chace of that 4th spot. In race one there was this guy that was running at a steady pace about 50 meters in front of me. No matter how much I picked up the pace,I just couldn’t catch up. In the end he ended up beating me by a mere 8 seconds.

Well this time, I noticed that this same guy was a few meters in front of me ( only being able to recognize him as I got closer). However, this time he kept losing ground as I maintained a steady pace about ½ to go. I then knew that I had it. I just needed to stay focused and slowly increase the pace with whatever bit of energy I had in me, for I was dead tired already. I managed to finally catch up, pass him, and kept going to the finish line. I finished strong with a big smile for all to see, with a time of 31:56, but inside I was dead tired.

Is exactly what I did when I saw that guy I needed to beat!!! hehe

I congratulated ( inside actually thinking..." you and you are next to go down on race #3...lol ) and talked to a few of the guys after the race . They all agreed that the course felt tougher this time around. The heat was certainly more intense which could have contributed also. That was good to hear along with the fact that I decreased my time by 31 seconds. That was enough to know that, although It might have felt a bit tougher, I performed much better than last time and therefore I can conclude that my Long Beach Marathon Training is coming along great. Now for race three of the series on August 6th. Thanks Elio and Lizzy for coming along and cheering me throughout the race….you guys rock!!! That concludes my race recap….Now for some funny videos I found while surfing the net. The following video might explain why our students are underperforming at the many top Universitie of this country…they are too busy playing mattress domines in the halls of their college campus. Boy of boy…do I miss those college days…living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Day Road Trip up the 101 Recap

Miles run: 5 mile easy run……………………..asphalt/dirt………………….sunny/hot

Fuel for thought: "If you ever get a second chance in life for something, you've got to go all the way." - Lance Armstrong

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today was a fun filled day full of road miles, great cities, and people. I started out my day as usual with a 5 mile easy run in preparation for tomorrows 5 mile trail race. I then hurried up home, did the usual upper body strengthening exercises, stuffed my face with carbs , showered and off I went on a quick day roadtrip down the 101 towards Ventura. My first stop was in Woodland Hills were I stopped to visit my good friend Susan. We headed out to this local park in Encino and walked around this cool lake with ducks and birds flocking like crazy left and right. We then headed out and had some Chinese food for lunch. I then proceeded to continue on my journey up the 101 to my next stop which happened to be Oak Park right by Agura Hills, Ca. I found this city to be very quiet, clean, and secluded off to the side of any major freeway or major congestion spots. I was truly taken by the rolling hills and potential running trails I could see from the my car view. Oh, so just in case you were wondering, the reason for this trip is that I am looking into relocating very soon somewhere along the 101 and have come to do some exploring. I find this area just North/West of Los Angeles to be similar Riverside in terms of population density. However, it is safer, and it is a bit cooler ( the cool ocean breeze is sure nice) and sure its much better for my running lifestyle.

After I left Oak park I continued on my trajectory along the 101 to Thousand Oaks, the neighboring city. I ended up stopping by the Lakes Strip Mall and had an ice cream sundae ( I know I know, not the smartest treat the day before a race….) . I found this city to be very similar to Oak park, with more commercial buldings and definitely more traffic ( obviously, it is a bigger city) . From these two cities I would probably like to work in Thousand Oaks and live and run in Oak Park. Not so fast, however, I then came to my final spot of Ventura. I got off on Main Street and headed down to the downtown area filled with shops, restaurants, and lots of locals and turists walking the streets on a nice summer night. I came to the realization that this place was very nice indeed and it brought back memories of my visit to San Luis Obispo, where I’d move in a heartbeat if there were more job opporunties. While driving around Ventura, I realized that my sister didn’t live too far from here and gave her a call to see what she was up to. As it turns out, she lives with her husband and child live in Ojai, but were in Ventura having dinner at one of the restaurants at the local mall there ( talk about coincidence) . I headed over and was able to see her and my beautiful niece. I also got to visit the local multisport shop,Inside Track, of one of the great runners from my high school years,Josh Spiker. As it turns out, the shop was closed by the time I got there, but upon sending him facebook comment, I found out through an almost instant reply that he was still in the shop, but was leaving as I was heading out to the Campgrounds. I was looking to buy a nice pair of shoes for my next races. I realize that the ones I have are reaching retirement status. Now that I know the shop’s store hours, I will have to head out soon and hopefully get some shoes and meet that cool guy I’ve come to know through running and now facebook. If you are ever in this part of Ventura you definitely have to check out Josh Spiker’s running shop, Inside Track. There is nothing more rewarding that Supporting local businesses, especially when Josh is a great avid runner like us.

At 10pm I was on my was back to the IE, Riverside ( my home for now). As I was driving I did a recap of my days’ road adventure. I decided that of all the cities that I visited, Ventura is probably at the top. Now it’s a matter of job opportunity. Where can I easily transition into a career that will give me the flexibility to focus more on my running lifestyle. On the other hand, what If I just take some time off to really think about what I truly want to do career wise. I mean, after all, with the way the economy stinks there is two things to do, go back to school ( MBA or Masters, Naa) or Travel. The second sounds tempting. I think I got some more thinking to do. I am definitely going to visit more often before I decide where I will end up. I have a few months to decide. I finally got home a little past midnight and called it a day…living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

* Oh, by the way( before i forget, and get my behind kicked...) Happy Birthday to my sister Elizabeth Haro (photo above)!!!! She turns 15 today….getting old little sister( not so little now) lol.

Shhh!!!It doesn't know you are looking at him....

Calling all runners and running fans:

This morning started with a 7 mile lazy run. I mean lazy cause I just didn’t feel it. Perhaps it was the fact that I got woken up abruptly by my alarm which ended up starting me on the wrong foot, as they say. Whatever the reason, I did finish my run and then rushed home to start the day. Today I sent out the package to Jason Sadler from I Wear Your Shirt .com for Salmiler to be featured on Saturday. Jason is this cool guy that had the crazy but cleaver idea of wearing a shirt with a companie's logo as a form of advertisement for pay. Each day of the year was increased by 1 dollar, starting with 1 dollar on January 1st , 2 dollars on January 2nd and 365 dollars on December 31st, get it? Well, by the time I caught on to this guy, half of 2009 had been sold. I did, however, end up purchasing Saturday July 11th so stay tuned for Salmiler to be featured on I Wear Your Shirt. Calling all runners and running fans:

Today on this very day that we celebrate Independence Day here in America, I went out on a medium long 14 mile run. I was a little bumbed to not see many people out running today. I know they were probably all out in Atlanta Georgia running the Peachtree 10k Road Race. This year there were 50,0009 finishers. I can only imagine how many actually started and not to mention all the bandits that probably entered unofficially. Great Job to all those that ran, including my friends the bandits hehe. I wish I could have made it out that way. But hey there is next year so we‘ll have to start working on that one. I have yet to hear from a couple friends that ran this race. Specifically, Great job to Nick Arciniaga who ran a 29.44 to finish in 31st place. We’ll see how it all went down when they get back to me. As for those celebrating the fourth of July, I wish that you all have a fun and exciting day full of great food, family, laughs, and safe fun. Meanwhile I will be stuck at work for the rest of the day, wishing I was part of the fun. Its cool though, for I have loads of fun activities planned for myself in my head while I fullfill the responsiblities of what we have come to know as work….living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today I went out for a ten mile run. The weather was nice and I felt great after having been off yesterday. I really tried to push it to a tempo pace from mile 5 to 9, basically the second half until finally slowing down one mile to go. I will try to put in another hard workout before next week’s second 5 mile race of the series in Tustin, Ca. Please see the calendar section on this page for more information on this upcoming race. After my run I hung out with my really good friend Jose and his awesome family. We headed over to Ontario Millls and watched Ice Age 2 the return of th dinesours. I must admit I don’t go to movie theateres often and usually when I do go, I stay away from animated moves. This movie, however, was entertaining and fun, so it was well worth it. Now that I am typing this blog entry, It just hit me that I have no drinkable water in my house. That only adds another choir to my day. Having to get water sucks. But If you are a runner, water is the most essential elemnt for hydration so here I come Raphs….living this lifestyl on the run, R U?

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today I went out on an easy 9 mile run. Every runner needs a recovery run after yesterday’s high intensity interval work out. Today’s run would have been a little more pleasant if a.) It hadn’t been so hot or b.) if I had gone straight out the door as soon as I got up this morning, instead of jumping on the net for an hour…Okay okay…I admit it was my fault. Its just that with all the crazy stuff happening in our times, I couldn’t resist. Once you get on you can’t stop. On another hand, its my Friday and I am gearing up for a few days of fun ( with lots of running too) planned ahead…living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Miles run: day off from the trails…..

Calling all runnrs and running fans:

Today I woke up after having had 11 hours of good sleep. I initially planned on getting up at 8am but my bed felt just too good to get up. I tried again at 9 and then 10 but no, it had to be 11am when I finally got up. I don’t tend to sleep in past 9am often but today was my day off from running and after having had a busy week work wise and running wise with only one day off, I deserved it. I am currently re reading a great motivational book on the positives and strengths of one’s mental thought. The book is called the Law of Attraction the basics of the teachings of Abraham by Ester and Jerry Hicks. I have read it once before and now I think a second time will help reenforce my understanding of the powerful elements of this universal law. There are other great books, and even a movie , “ the secret” that also teach about the wonderful benefits of the law of attraction as a universal law. Its very interesting to see how your toughts manifests thelves in real life wheathr you like it or not. Not to worry, for there is ways that you can counteract these manifestations into more desirable ones. Calling all runners and running fans:

Today I am getting up to go to work earlier than usual. Its 4:41 am and I’m here typing away with my eyes barely open. Yesterday I ran a nice 12 mile run at a medium pace intensity after having taken a two hour nap. Perhaps that can explain why I couldn’t fall asleep last night, making it so hard to get up this morning. I kinda knew that would happen but it just felt so good to take a restful nap mid day on a warm sunny day. Today I shall be doing mile repeats. Oh I don’t know, 4 or 5 with ¼ mile recovery. I’ve read in more than one publication how beneficial these workouts can be for a marathon runner. They help build that kick when your body says no more. I am just hoping that the track at La Sierra HS is open and accessible for me to do this. If not, I think I have the perfect mile straightaway to do these. On another side note, I am still deeply in disbelief on the sudden death of Michal Jackson. He was a wonderful artist and will forever remain as “the king of pop.” I vividly remember in the 90’s always trying to do th moon walk that he puplarized as part of his choreography. Never as successful as him but oh what fun times we had in those days. Michale Jackson Rest in Peace…you will be forever deeply missed………..living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Calling all runners and running fans:

This morning I woke up feeling a little more sore than yesterday after Monday’s hill trail run up Skyline. I, therefore, decided to run an easy 7 mile run to help losen my legs and speed up recovery. On another thought, I am a little bumbed out about my running watch dying on me yesterday. All of the sudden I look at my wach to check my time and blank. I think the batter just died cause it would sorta come back but then trun off again. I have ran a couple of marathons with this watch and tons and tons of days of running so there is lots of sentimental value invested here. I am hoping I can take it back to get the batter replaced. It wasn’t an expensive watch. In fact, its only a timex iron man triathlon watch that had to have been no more than 30 bucks. I never would have thought I’d feel this way about a watch. Calling all runners and running fans:

Today I headed out to do hills. I ended up going out to an area called Skyline down in Corona, Ca, about 15 minutes from my house. This uphill trail with spectacular views of corona and surrounding cities is part of the Cleveland National Forest and has a set of medium steep trails leading out to Orange County. I ended up going up to the highest peak and back, which too about 40 minutes from my car to the top. The total running session was about 1 hr. and 15 minute with the downhill and warm down. Along the way I met a hicker lady all geared up heading up the trails, practicing for a 30 mile hike across some cascade mountains in Washington State. She must have been around 60 or so. Probably tretired or maybe just a very passionate hiker that was probably a miler like me in her earlier years. What will I be doing at the of 60? I hope it involves running that’s all I hope for….living this lifestyle on th run, R U?

Internet was down…but now I’m back!!!

Miles run: 10 mile recovery run………………….dirt………………nice and cool

Fuel for thought: "It's at the borders of pain and suffering that the men are separated from the boys." -Emil Zatopek

Calling all runners and running fans:

Its been a few days since I last updated this blog, all due to my internet going down here at my place. It happens very year…the wires get hot, according to what the tech guy said, and the connection gets blocked!!! It better not happen again….were my exact words, after the guy was in his truck and I was locked behind the screen door. For the first time in a very long time, I felt as though I was disconnected from everyone and everything. If it wasn’t for my iphone, I probably would have not survived this 4 day sudden internet outage. I’m kidding…but it certainly felt that way. Speaking of iphones, I am a little upset that I couldn’t wait to get to most recent model iphone. I had to hear it from some of my coworkers all day yesterday how now I am outdated a month after just getting my phone. How mine sucks because its slower and has no video recording features…..and on and on ….Well, if I want the most recently updated iphone I can buy one. I don’t care that your phone is faster than mine or that yours takes video recordings. You are not the most attractive thing on earth and, therefore, no one will by dying to see you on a video you might post on you tube. Plus…I can still race you and most likely will beat you. To me, that’s all that matters!!!!

Aftr last weeks 5 mile race, I ended up catching something out in Tustin and was dragging the last couple of days. I had a strong cough and a bad head ache that lasted for days. Luckaly I started feeling better on Tuesday and was able to get back on the trails on Wednesday. I ended up running 4 and 7 miles on Wed and Thursday, respectively. On Friday I was able to do a decent interval work out with my friend Mike. We did a mile warmup, 3.5 miles of 1.5 minute intervals at race pace on dirt and finished it off with a 1.5 mile warm down. Thank god we started early for it was a hot one by the time we finished at around 10:15am. Great job Mike….that last one kickd both of our behinds!!! This morning I ended up doing a 10 mile recovery run along the trails of Victoria. Originally Mike and I intended on running on skyline, but after receiving a text from him later last night ( more like this morning at 3:30am) , the plans were off. I shall be taking tomorrow off. Its fathers day and I have done enough for this week. We shall start next week with a hill run up Skyline on Monday…..happy fathers day to all the pops out there….living this lifestyle on the run, R U ?

5 Mile Trail Race Details

Miles run: 6 mile recovery…………………dirt/asphalt………………….cool

Fuel for thought: “The talent to be a great runner is a gift to you from God; utilizing that talent is a gift from you to yourself.” -Anonymous

Calling all runners and running fans:

So we headed out to the Cedar Grove Park for the The Vasque Peters’ Canyon Summer trail 5 mile race in Tustin at around 4:20pm, a little later than expected, but still ended up getting there at around 5pm. When we got there, there were only a few people so It got me thinking if there would actually be any competition to push the pace. Luckily, as usual, people started arriving. It was expected, it was a weekday when many people still had work or school. I so as son as we got there, I registered and was given my bib number ( I got 1270 ) and shirt. They also had the option of a BBQ instead of the shirt but I decided that Pick up stick would be my next stop after the race, so the shirt would do. I had my sister Liz with me, which was convenient for pictures and carrying stuff. Not that I would ever use her, but hey she wanted to come along and that was very helpful. After I put my bib on, I did my usual warm-up exercise and waited some more for the race to start. I didn’t really know anybody there so I didn‘t talk to anybody but my sister with the exception for the usual good luck or small talk from runner to runner. Finally the announcer asked that we all go to the starting line and we all did. The starting line was a very narrow trail with wood fencing along the side so you can imagine the line of people extending far back. There were a total of about 304 paid runners and some 60 or so not paid ( bandit ) runners. I stood about 10 feet behind the starting line and took off along with everyone else with the sound of the whistle. I didn’t know what to expect. I was at the front of the pack and managed to stay up there for remainder of the race. I never saw anybody from behind make any significant move on me or anybody upfront. The first mile and a half was flat. Then after 1.5 miles the hills came up. At mile 2 that’s when huge, but I mean huge rolling hills came up. There must have been 8 or 10 of these huge hills with very steep down hills. I was careful not to trip or slide off the side. Any sudden bad step or turn and you could end up rolling down and hurting yourself. Surprisingly, I had a lot of energy and breezed right through the hills. I could however, hear some heavy breathing right behind me but would not dare look. At this point I stayed in the same spot that I finished, 5th place. I continued to make some gains on the guy in front of me. I could see him constantly looking back like a wounded soldier looking back at the villain chasing him down. At mile 4 the hills were finally over and now it was all down hill. At this point I managed to increase my speed and made more gains on the guy in front of me. The guy behind me was probably done for I didn’t hear his breathing or his footsteps. As I got closer to the finish line, I got a rush of energy from the cheers and claps of the audience and managed to finish strong. I ended up finishing this killer race in a time of 32.27, the guy in front of me beat me by 7 seconds ( I got next month to beat him in the series) and the guy behind me came 40 seconds behind me. Overall, including paid and no paid runners, I came in 5th place. One of the bandit runners took the race at a time of 29.41. After the race, I did a quick cool down, waited a little to hear the raffle drawings, which knowing our luck turned nothing for us, and then headed back home. We stopped by pick up sticks in Norco for some dinner and life was good again. Mission accomplished….living this lifestyle on the run, R U ?

Trail Run Race Day / 1Mile Race Saturday

Miles run: 5 mile race this afternoon

Fuel for thought: “Everyone in life is looking for a certain rush. Racing is where I get mine.” -John Trautmann

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today is the The Vasque Peters’ Canyon Summer trail 5 mile race 1 in Tustin Ca. The race starts at 6:15 but I shall be leaving with hopes of getting there by 4:30 to pick up bib, shirt etc. and check out the course we will be running. I am excited to be racing on trails again. This race should take us through rolling hills, running creeks, and dirt. My sister Liz is coming along to cheer me on and, who knows, maybe she just might join on race two in July. I should have a full details of the race and photos later on tonight or tomorrow.

Now for those of you still looking for a race to participate in this weekend, look no more. The First Annual 1 Mile California Festival will be held on Saturday June 13, at 3:00pmat the Dimond Bar High School, in California. A great running elite who is hosting the event, Carlos Handler, was kind enough to invite me, however, due to my race today and other engagements, I doubt I will be able to make it. For those of you still wondering what you could possibly run at this point in your life, here is your chance to find out. Or this could also be a good way to jumpstart your summer training workout. There are several divisions including; youth mile, walk/run mile, costume, and open mile. If not into running, at least come out and support this local event. The masters mile, and the high school race should get pretty exciting with many talented local athletes coming out to put on a great show…living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

First 5 mile Trail Series Race Tomorrow

Miles run: 4 miles………………asphalt…………………overcast

Fuel for thought: “We can't all be heroes because someone has to sit on the curb and clap as they go by." - Will Rogers

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today is the last day of school for many schools in this area, which means I will probably not be subbing anytime soon. I guess I will just be forced to enjoy my days off for the summer, which is always nice. Who knows, maybe take some short trips up and down the coast in California looking for great running trails. Tomorrow I will be running a 5 mile Trail Series 1 in Tustin, California and, therefore, today’s run was a quick and easy three mile run along Victoria street, here in Riverside. For more information about tomorrow’s race, please visit the calendar section on this Salmiler lifestyle blog page. There you will find other upcoming race events, including the Long Beach Marathon planned for October 2009.…living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Monday of Randomness

Miles run: 6 mile run………asphalt/dirt…………………sunny not too hot

Fuel for thought: “The perfect run - The wind at your back, the sun in front of you, and your friends by your side.” -Aaron Douglas Trimble

Calling all runners and running fans:

Today I went out for a 6 mile run after having been awaken by my dog barking at a fly in the room. Dogs tend to exaggerate at times and this morning’s instance was not the exception. Usually, I tend to be a heavy sleeper but once something to disrupts my sleep, I can’t go back to sleep and end up just getting up. Tomorrow is my sister Liz’s graduation from middle school. I am stoked to see her go on to high school and see what she can do with her running. Yesterday I brought her along on a five mile run to start building up her mileage base in preparation for the cross country season in the fall. I sure do have high expectations for her and her running journey up ahead. I will update on the graduation details after tomorrow along with pictures, but for now I have to get ready for work…living this lifestyle on the run, R U?

Day off from the run/ Salmiler apparel

Miles run: day off from running today….

Fuel for thought: “ "Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it." -Oprah Winfrey

Calling all runners and running fans:
Today I slept in until about 9:30 am. I got back from work last night and decided to stay up knowing that I wouldn’t be running today and therefore didn’t need to get up extra early. Instead, I stayed up and worked on a couple designs + ideas for products ( shirts, hats, hoodies etc.) to add to the Salmiler apparel shop, which surly is coming along great. Working on this stuff is fun since you know it is promoting the lifestyle that one truly enjoys. It takes a lot of time and dedication though, but its okay. I got all the time in the world. Just as a reminder, Salmiler is a lifestyle for life……living this lifestyle on the run, R U?
